CHAPTER SEVEN
MARY let Tyler pour her some wine instead. âIt must have been very lonely for you growing up.â
He shrugged. âMaybe. It was normal for me, whatever it was.â
âIâm an only child too,â she offered. âMy father died when I was nine, but my experience was very different from yours. My mother was always loving, and she married again when I was twenty and had left home.â
âHow did you feel about that?â
âI was a bit jealous at first,â she confessed. âBut when I saw her and Bill together, I realised how lonely she had been all those years. She deserved to be happy.â
âIâm not sure how I would have got on with a stepmother,â said Tyler. âAs it was, my father died when I was sixteen, and since then I havenât had to worry about what anyone else thinks. When youâre only accountable to yourself, you can take risks you wouldnât otherwise be able to take. I built up my first company from scratch, made a million and lost everything, so then I had to start all over again. I wouldnât have been able to do that if Iâd had to think about someone else.â
âYouâre going to have to think about someone else if you get married,â Mary pointed out.
âI suppose so.â Tyler didnât sound particularly enthused at the prospect. âNot that my wife will be concerned with the business side of things.â
âWhy not?â said Mary. âYou canât divide life into neat little compartments.â She could see his jaw setting mulishly, and she sighed. âThe whole point of marriage is that the two of you share everything,â she told him patiently. âIâm not suggesting your wife is in on every business decision, but sheâll certainly want to know if youâre worried about work, just like youâll need to know if thereâs anything sheâs worried about. Youâre going to have to learn to talk to each other.â
âWhy are women so obsessed with talking?â said Tyler with a return to his old irritability. âAll they ever say is, âWe need to talk,â when what they mean is, âI need to tell you what youâre doing wrongâ!â
Mary took a reflective slug of her wine. âIf youâd ever listened to what they had to say, you might not be in a position where you have to pay me five thousand pounds to say much the same thing,â she pointed out with deceptive mildness. âAnyway, itâs not just about discussing problems. You shouldnât marry anyone youâre not happy just to sit and chat to, without ever having to think of something to say. A fulfilling relationship is about a lot more than sex, you know.â
âAre you suggesting that we donât have sex until weâre married?â asked Tyler, lifting his brows derisively.
There was a short pause while they both listened to his words echoing into the silence.
âWhen I say âweâ, of course I donât mean you and me,â he added, his colour slightly heightened. âI mean a future fiancée.â
âOf course,â said Mary, pleased to be the one who could sound smooth and understanding for once.
